Guide to Using the Catalogue

You can explore Mary Cassatt: A New Catalogue Raisonné through:

CATALOGUE ENTRIES
Each entry is comprised of the following:

Image

The entry page for each work in the catalogue features an image of the work in the upper left-hand corner. In most cases, the images are the highest quality possible and were newly obtained for this catalogue. When the location of the original artwork is unknown, or when a new image could not be obtained, an older black-and-white image from the Breeskin archive has been used.

Clicking on the image itself or on the magnifying glass icon below it yields a larger version of the image in a separate window. Clicking again on the larger image will magnify it further.

Clicking on the image of any Mary Cassatt work on this web site will take you to its full catalogue entry.

Catalogue Numbers

At the top of each catalogue entry are two catalogue numbers for the work. First is the new Mary Cassatt Catalogue Raisonné (2014) number in red (MCCR number). Second is the Breeskin catalogue raisonné (1970) number in gray and enclosed in parentheses. The new Mary Cassatt Catalogue Raisonné, unlike the Breeskin catalogue raisonné, does not at this time include counterproofs or drawings. Nor does it include prints. Some of the works in the Breeskin catalogue raisonné do not appear in the Mary Cassatt Catalogue Raisonné. There are now 682 consecutively numbered works in the 2014 catalogue, as opposed to 943 in the 1970 catalogue.

It is possible to search for a work either by MCCR number or by Breeskin number. You can also go through the entries consecutively by MCCR number using the "next" and "previous" buttons in the search box that appears on each entry page. If you search for a Breeskin number that has been eliminated from the catalogue, you will be directed to a page explaining the possible reasons for its elimination.

The Breeskin catalogue raisonné contains 943 works. All Breeskin numbers above 943 were created by the Mary Cassatt Catalogue Raisonné Committee for record keeping purposes and do not correspond to works in the Breeskin catalogue. (See Catalogue Concordance in RESOURCES for further information).

Title / Alternate Title

Works that appear in the Breeskin catalogue raisonné retain their Breeskin titles in the Mary Cassatt Catalogue Raisonné. Works that do not appear in the Breeskin catalogue raisonné generally appear in the Mary Cassatt Catalogue Raisonné under the titles provided by their current owners.

Each title is followed by its alternate titles, an alphabetical list of all other known titles under which the work has appeared in exhibitions or written references. In cases where an alternate title is still uncertain, that title is preceded by a question mark, e.g. ?Woman and Child.

Date(s)

As a result of recent research and scholarship, many of the works have been redated. Dates in the Mary Cassatt Catalogue Raisonné may differ from those in the Breeskin catalogue raisonné.

Medium(s)

The Mary Cassatt Catalogue Raisonné (2014) includes all of Cassatt's known paintings, pastels, and watercolors. Prints and drawings are not included. Works in the counterproof medium, including many pictures never known to Breeskin, will be addressed in this catalogue at some future point.

Dimensions

The dimensions of each work appear first in inches and then, in parentheses, in centimeters (height x width in both cases).

Inscription

The inscription line describes the style and location of Mary Cassatt's signature on the work. As the artist frequently did not sign or date her artworks, many are simply labeled "Unsigned."

Present Location

In a number of cases, the present location of a work is listed simply as "Private collection" out of consideration for the privacy of the current owner.

Provenance / Ownership History

This section traces the location of the work from the time of its creation to the present day. The appearance of the word "to" before an owner's name indicates that the work was transferred directly to that owner from the previously mentioned one. The absence of the word "to" means that it is not known exactly how the work came into that owner's possession, only that the individual is the next documented owner of the work.

Exhibition History

The exhibition history provides a chronological list of all exhibitions in which the work is known to have appeared. In addition to the date and venue of the show, each listing also includes, where known, the number and title under which the work was displayed and the name of the owner who lent it to the exhibition. Click on the linked date and venue to view more detailed information about the exhibition, from which you can also link to a gallery of all the Cassatt works included in that show.

Published References

The published references section provides a chronological list of all publications (books, newspapers, and journals) in which the work is mentioned. Each listing also includes the page(s) on which the work is named and the title(s) under which it appears. Click on the linked name and date to view more detailed information about the reference, from which you can also link to a gallery of all the Cassatt works mentioned in that reference.

Commentary

Many of the entries in the catalogue feature commentaries that discuss such topics as visual composition, Cassatt's stylistic development and influences, and the collectors and collecting of her work. Some commentaries also feature images, such as newspaper drawings after the work in question or related works by other artists.

ESSAYS

With the exception of Adelyn Dohme Breeskin's commentary, each of these essays has been written especially for this catalogue. Breeskin’s commentary is taken directly from the Breeskin catalogue raisonné (1970).
